Reframe_Source

The installation ‘Source’ was part of nesa’s art|works exhibition in Radstock, September 2007.

At the top of the installation a glass demijohn contains young fermenting apple wine. Lit from behind, bubbles of fermentation rise through the clear pink liquid with a gentle ‘popping’ sound as they escape the airlock. I have longtime enjoyed the gentle cycles of hedgerow harvesting and the alchemy of traditional country winemaking.

On the middle shelf the imac monitor plays a film made working with middle school students for Somerset Art Weeks 2006. This imac has traveled with me to many groups of people, young and old, on a journey of expanded creativity!
‘Hands of Time’ is a 9 minute exploration of the seven ages of man, as shown through the hands of the students and members of the rural community of Williton, on Somerset’s North coast. The source in life is celebrated by community, creativity and communication. The film (with sound) played as an installation in the school; one of a series of art projects involving students with the wider community.

Art|works, the exhibition, was a unique showcase of the work of artists delivering nesa’s socially engaged programme.
Coinciding with the finish of the Reframe project, it was a perfect opportunity to show my work combining glass and moving image for the first time in public.
A 3 minute 40 second short film, looped, projects onto cast glass.

The apples shown in the film, and sitting next to each of the three pieces of work, are Pink Ladies, from a garden in North East Somerset. The film layers animation, footage of the apple tree, and other visual effects designed to reflect into, onto and around the glass pieces with a rich and uplifting, colourful sense of timelessness.
